The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed an appeal against a Federal Capital Territory High Court judgment that awarded ₦10 million in damages to former Minister of Power, Olu Agunloye, over a defamation claim.
The anti-corruption agency also requested a stay of execution to prevent enforcement of the judgment while the appeal is being considered by the Court of Appeal.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, disclosed that the notice of appeal was filed on Friday at the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
According to the commission, the appeal is based on 11 grounds, with the EFCC asking the appellate court to grant four specific reliefs.
The appeal follows the FCT High Court’s decision, which found the commission liable for defaming the former minister and awarded him ₦10 million in damages.
The Court of Appeal is expected to determine whether the judgment should stand or be set aside after considering the arguments presented by both parties.
