Fresh consultations are underway among major opposition figures as political leaders intensify efforts to forge a stronger and more coordinated front ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
A coalition of concerned Nigerians, The G100 is reportedly engaging leaders and representatives of major opposition political parties as part of its push to promote greater cooperation and collaboration among opposition forces.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, New Nigeria Peoples Party leader Rabiu Kwankwaso and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde are among the prominent figures expected at an opposition summit scheduled to hold in Abuja on August 18.
The proposed summit is expected to examine possible areas of cooperation among the opposition parties, address existing divisions and explore the prospects of developing a common political strategy ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The consultations come amid growing calls for opposition parties to overcome individual political ambitions and present a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
A key issue likely to dominate discussions is whether the major opposition figures can reach an agreement on a consensus candidate capable of uniting their supporters and challenging the APC.
Of particular interest is the possibility of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi working together, given their respective political followings and previous presidential ambitions. Any decision by Atiku to support Obi, or vice versa, could significantly reshape the opposition’s calculations ahead of 2027.
However, achieving such an alliance could prove difficult, as questions of political interests, party structures, regional considerations and presidential ambitions remain major factors in the opposition camp.
With the 2027 election drawing closer, the success or failure of these efforts could determine whether Nigeria’s opposition parties remain fragmented or emerge as a formidable political coalition capable of mounting a serious challenge for power.
